Here’s a really fun project (for all those kids that
need something to DO) that they really enjoy. It will be fun for a considerable
length of time and you won’t hear “I’m bored!” five minutes after they start
this one.
Colored vinegar is poured or
dripped onto baking soda, and there is foaming and bubbling which of course the
kids love. It also creates some really cool designs.
I poured about 1 ½ to 2 cups of baking soda on each plate.
Then in three small bowls I put about ½ cup of white vinegar and added about a
dozen or less drops of food coloring to each. I didn’t use red because I had previously
used all I had for Red Velvet cake. I
didn’t mention it and the kids didn’t notice red was missing.
Next I put two spoons in each bowl, one for each child so
there wouldn’t be arguing over whose turn it was. An eye dropper works great for this but I only had one of them, it wouldn't work with two kids. Then I placed it all on a towel
covered table.
I instructed the kids that they must be careful, this would be a
scientific experiment and like scientist they would need to concentrate and observe
carefully. No jumping up from the table or playing around and being goofy. They were to dip up a little of the color they
chose and carefully pour it on the plate - I didn’t want a big mess to clean
up.
They started getting brave and used two and then three spoons at a time.
It was a great success and we will be doing it again
tomorrow. I saved the left over colored vinegar (in small Mason jars of course!).
I buy baking soda and vinegar in large quantities at Costco so it is a very
inexpensive project. I don’t mind letting them do this one over and over; it’s
less cost than painting!
