Lost Domain Name and Other News

Well friends, it's been a while! I didn't check my blog email for months and the result is that I didn't see the email telling me my credit card on file was expired so my domain name would not be renewed. If I want to renew it now they are asking for lots of money so I'm not going to do it. In the mean time, please note that the address for this blog is now Family Life and Home blogspot.com. That is https://familylifeandhome.blogspot.com/ .

Checking In!

Hey everyone, yes I am still kickin'! I disappeared for a while; I kinda imploded. Not a pretty picture. I was burned out big time with blogging and I had to take a step back and take care of me a bit. My food allergies had become so intense I was getting desperate for help, life was miserable! I knew I would have to get serious and come up with some kind of a plan to get better and quick.

I Just Had a Moment

Excuse me but I just had a moment; after a long day thats still not quite over, a moment of tears running down my face, crying uncontrollably for just the tiniest of moments. Oh don't misunderstand, they were tears of joy, tears of sheer gratitude and love and the realization once again of my many many blessings!

I sat down for a brief moment and started scrolling through the photos on my phone that I have taken over this last year. It has been a busy day, the big kids are out of school and my house is bursting with children. I love days like this one, the kids playing together so well. They laughed and had so much fun and squeezed every ounce out of every moment. Not that there weren't moments of disagreements and a few boo boos. But all the hard work of training them to be kind and polite to each other showed today. The really hard work of being patient while helping them work through being selfish and hard to get along with and instead learning how to share and be fair in play.

Perfect Gift for Grandparents

As a grandparent, I have always planned to write my life stories down someday for my grand kids. Family stories are so wonderful to have and I most certainly love and cherish the oral stories passed down from my grandparents. (It would be so great to have those stories in writing!) But where to start? And what is is interesting about my life?

Well I now have the perfect thing to jump start my memories and stories! Stories From My Grandparent, an Heirloom Journal for Your Grandchild has been put together by my blogging friend Susan Adcox.  It is an heirloom journal that asked the questions for you; you just fill in the blanks! Oh it's wonderful and so easy to do! And I really do love that it's spiral bound and lays flat to easily write in. A perfect gift for the grandparent in your life.

Who Am I Going To Be Today?

I haven't written a post like this in a long time. I hope you will read this in it's entirety; thanks!  Oh and FYI - I have chosen to alter my photos as I have to discourage unauthorized reuse of pics of my kids :)

I can say with certainty that where ever you are right now and with whatever is going on in your life, it will change! It won't always be like this. Try to see the bigger picture of your days and know that it all passes, usually too quickly!

Make a Better PB & J Sandwich

My mother always made the best Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. She always used Grape Jam not jelly because it is fruitier. She had an usual technique to make them that I never thought to ask her about; she would mix the peanut butter with the jam in a bowl before spreading it thickly onto bread.

Sugaring

Guest Post

I want to thank Connie for letting me be part of her special grandparenting blog, Family Home and Life. It is a real privilege to ‘write in’ for her today.

By way of introduction, I’m Judy, a retired Human Resources Executive and Master Gardener. I live across the country from Connie in New Hampshire on a small three-generation family farm, 1840 Farm

We have Nigerian Dwarf Goats for milk, Heritage Breed Hens, both standard and bantams for fresh eggs, and one handsome French Angora Rabbit, Herbert Menninger. Fans of Curious George will probably recognize where his name came from.

Starting New Traditions & a Blessing Blanket

Do you have family traditions? We do too. I try to be careful not to over load the family with following too many of them because family traditions can become chores rather than blessings. When we were expecting our first grand child, I wanted to have a gown and blanket for each child to use on their Dedication Day at church; like a Christening gown. A new tradition to follow.

Time Management & a Giveaway!

Guest Post

Hi there! I'm Michelle Muckala with www.michellemuckala.com and am SO excited to be part of Connie's anniversary month by guest blogging for all of her awesome readers! As a full-time working momma who is raising two young children, married to a husband who works opposite shifts as me, owns a health & wellness business, and writes articles about finding balance between a career and family, I hear a lot of women say they just wish they had more time. It's true that you can only do so much. I hear ya! After all, there is no way to make a day longer than 24 hours, a week longer than 168 hours, or a year longer than 8736 hours (and sometimes let's admit, we are glad for that). However, there is a way to make time work in your favor. I'm excited to share with you how I manage to make my crazy schedule work in my favor

Celebrating What I've Learned

Today I want to give a short run down on some things I have learned about blogging this last year but first......welcome to March! Yay! Oh, why am I so happy about March? Well those of you who know me and read this blog know that last month was terrible - so happy to see it behind me. And best of all....March is my blog anniversary month! I can't believe it has been two years since I first began. (2 1/2 really, you will have to read my about me page to understand that) This last year, I really stepped it up by posting better content on a regular basis, and started two link parties...Wow Us Wednesday and Grandparent's Say It Saturday.

Hallmark, Helping You With the Holidays

Christmas is coming fast and already my grand kids are talking about their Christmas wish list. I have a wonderful way to help my grand kids count down the days until Christmas this year courtesy of Hallmark. Hallmark is a trusted and well known maker of wonderful Holiday items including greeting cards. I want to tell you about two ways to help make the Holidays fun for your families from Hallmark this Holiday season.

The first is an interactive Wish List Greeting Card that your child can record their Holiday wish list into.  With a couple of easy steps, your child can tell Santa what they would love to receive from him and this card will record it all. How fun would that be for the kids?

The second is also interactive; a Greeting Card that digitally counts down the days until Christmas. With a few simple instructions to follow, the time and date are set. How many days remaining until Christmas will be displayed displayed in the digital window.

Two of my granddaughters were over today and we set our interactive count down until Christmas Greeting Card together. Now I won’t have to tell the kids how many days until Christmas, we can look at the card to see for ourselves.

You need to watch this video for some great information about these interactive Greeting Cards.

Hallmark’s Signature Collection is always sophisticated and classy, a true quality product we know Hallmark provides. The Signature Collection has wonderful new designs to celebrate the seasons best, and a Hallmark card from you will let your family and friends know you care.

 Giveaway!
The winner of this giveaway will receive a pack of greetings; a $45 to $50 value, and will include:

·         An Interactive Recordable Greeting
·         An Interactive Countdown Greeting
·         An assortment of additional boxed and Signature Collection greetings

Good luck! Check back next week to see who wins; Hallmark Greeting Cards will help make your Holiday season more fun for all!

This giveaway is only available for participants with mailing addresses in the USA.

*Disclosure: I received Hallmark Greeting Cards free for review and for this giveaway. The opinions are completely my own.

Family Harvest Day 2012

We had a wonderful time at our Family Harvest Day and had a smaller crowd than last year. We kicked off the day with family group photos on the straw bales set up for this purpose. We are short on boys in our family but the girls make up for it with silliness and rough housing! No get together is ever complete with out a wrestling match with Papa :)

Then it was on to the fun and games! First we had a sack race that I completely forgot to photograph.  After a short break we had a three legged race with a child paired up with an adult. Even the adults had fun with this one and I think we had three or four races before moving on to the next activity. Then we made Scarecrow faces on paper plates all voting to forgo the full size Scarecrows we usually make.

All the kids had decorated a pumpkin to bring and they had a parade around the yard and through the house while carrying and displaying their pumpkins. (I only took the one small pic of that above). Look at these fancy pumpkins! The middle one is Cinderellas Coach, she is inside. The one on the end is Dr. Pumpkin that is happy to make house calls. Great job!

After this we enjoyed a home cooked pot luck meal that celebrated the fall harvest time. I used the dishes and flatware I purchased last year in keeping with a 'out in the country, down on grandma's farm' feel I was attempting to achieve inside a big city limits :)

There was plenty for the kids to do with a huge yard to run in, a trampoline to jump on, and a large swing set complete with a slide and fort. The kids all the way down to the two year old had an archery lessons using the straw bales for their targets. The oldest girl there, is a very good shot. The day ended with a swim in the pool, yes it was warm enough here for that!

What  a lovely, fun and relaxing time to visit and play; while celebrating the Harvest season and the blessings we all enjoy through out the year. And we didn't need a theme park or carnival; we accomplished it all the backyard with our family. We made some wonderful memories that day!

If you would like to read about another grandmother who puts on a Holiday gathering for her family that is out of this world wonderful, then head over to What Happens At Grandma's.  I may be linking this post at these link parties

My Search for Significance

My whole life I have felt like I had a purpose; I just never knew what the purpose was exactly. I have talents and abilities that may or may not distinguish me from my neighbor, but what are those talents and abilities actually worth in the bigger picture of my life? This feeling of having a purpose for my life has been the driving force behind the my lifelong quest to better myself, my character, my knowledge, my understanding of the people around me, and to learn what loving someone really means.

As an empty nester; a time when both of my parents had passed away, and my husband and I both were struck with life altering illnesses, I really struggled to find meaning in it all. I was left with unanswered questions about my life and if, other than my wonderful children I had raised, was it all just emptiness and for what? I am not a person who lives my life to full fill my dreams and desires, my joy has been in helping and teaching others and seeing them succeed. I attempted volunteer work in a variety of areas; thought about starting my own non profit organization at one point. Yet I couldn't see where I ‘fit’ in any of this. Then……. I had grand children!

Oh how it all quickly fell into place! At the time my first grandchild was born, I began to see what I had not been able to imagine before, having been wrapped up in my grief over the loss of both parents so close together, and our altered life styles due to our illnesses. I began to see where I could be a helper to my children again. A teacher to my sweet grand babies, a giver of love with the learned character of patience I had not owned when my children were little. I realized that somewhere along the journey of my life I had gained a lot of knowledge and had a lot to offer these precious little lives that had been given to us. I had found the purpose for my life. And that purpose is being a grandmother! Oh how wonderful to finally feel that I have come into my calling.

With the holding of that new tiny life in my arms for the first time, a whole new journey began for me. It has been exciting, wonderful. Most of my free time is spent planning, doing, preparing (or cleaning up after) for my grandkids. Do I mind that I have almost no time for myself? Absolutely not! I feel the ticking of the clock in my body each day, and I know that one day I will have to slow down more, and one day someone will take care of me. I don’t have a minute to waste, there is so much to do, to say, to give, to teach, so many things I want to sow into each child’s life. How could I think of myself at a time like this? I am needed, I have something to offer. These children need to know who they are and where they came from, they need a strong family to turn to when times are hard for them. Each day I am working as hard and as fast as I can to wrap them in a cocoon of love that will hold them all through their lives.

I remember my grandmother as a woman who contained more love and patience than anyone I had ever met. I thought her eyes must be just like the eyes of Jesus. I saw my grandmother less than a dozen times in my childhood. And those times were filled with cousins, aunts and uncles, in whirl wind visits that were miles and miles away from my home. Yet my grandmother made an impact on me that has stayed with my whole life. My grandmother was love as purely as any human can be, and I want to be that; a grandmother who loves so completely, that my grandchildren will never forget it as long as they live. Am I accomplishing that goal? Perhaps not, but it is what I strive for.

Are you a parent or grandparent? Did your life focus change or shift after the arrival of children?

A Very Special Day!

We had a very exciting day yesterday! It was the adoption day for my youngest granddaughter! That’s right, Itty Bitty is adopted and she is ours 100% at last! We have waited for this day since she came home to live in our family at two days old; and that was about sixteen months ago.

Several of the immediate family and friends took the day off work to attend the court hearing making the adoption final. We made up quite a crowd as we all took our turns passing through security at the court house. Inside, we waited in patience excitement for it to be our turn before the judge. All the kids were dressed up for the special day of course and some of us began photographing the play and happy faces of the cute kids. Security told us we had to put cameras away until we were inside in court room where we would not be infringing on the privacy of others who might accidentally be in the photos.

We crowded inside when it was our turn and several of us had to stand because there were a lot of us! The judge questioned my son and his wife and the adoption agency representative as we all watched and listened. The kids were good and sat still and quiet. When the judge finished and pronounced his agreement that Itty Bitty should be ours forever we cheered and clapped! Of course the picture taking began then.
It was so exciting; it was as exciting to us as if she had just been born and we were standing outside the hospital nursery window adoring her for the first time! We all then went to Itty Bitty’s home to celebrate with food, fun, swimming and cake. She was presented with gifts; and here is what she received from me.  A personalized book from I See Me,  “Who loves Me?” (I wrote a review for this book, click here to see it.)  One day I intend to write her story and how she came to be in our lives. I think it’s a rather special story, and I have been waiting until the legalities were all done before I shared it with you. What a wonderful day!
