Sewing With the Kids

Sewing is a skill that has served me well. It has helped out in time of need when money was tight, helped me make special one of a kind gifts, and has provided me with an abundant outlet for creativity. Kids that learn to sew also learn to have patience and self confidence. I think that all kids should learn some basic sewing. Here are my post about sewing with my grand kids.

First sewing lessons don't need to be hard. Here's how I first began to teach my grand daughters to sew.
Here's another child's beginner's lesson.
The second sewing lesson is here; and yet another lesson with three of the kids.
The kids can make their own doll's too, or a car or animal using this technique.

Check out a few of my favorite sewing books for kid's at my Amazon Store.

  1. I agree 100% about the enrichment that knowing how to sew has brought to my life! With that skill you can pretty much duplicate anything out of fabric. I also agree that it's the territory of grandma to pass it on to the next generation. I'm actually introducing it -in a very simplified way- this week when I next babysit! I love seeing your smart tips and the way you handled things with your cuties!

  4. It's wonderful to be able to pass sewing skills on to our kids! My girls have enjoyed learning and I know that they'll have those skills to refer to when they have a house of their own. It's such a blessing to have a machine and know how to use it! Thanks for sharing your links.

  7. Yes, it's a wonderful skill to have for girls or boys. Even though they would rather mom or somebody else do it, my boys (now grown) know there way around a sewing machine.

  8. I was just thinking today about those old-time sewing cards I remember from when my daughters were young. I wonder if they still make those. I can see that being a first step to making sewers out of my grandsons. Thanks for confirming the idea that they need to be. And thanks for linking to the GRAND Social. ♥

  9. I just saw Lisa's post..yes they have the sewing cards! I bought them from somewhere when Kate was little...so when I was trying to show her how to use a real needle and thread ( embroider her name on scrap fabric , or make a basic seam ) the cards came in handy for Brent who of course had to sew with us. Lasted 30 seconds for him but they came in handy! :) And then SHE went back to the cards and must have done about 5 in a row

  10. All children should sew! I agree completely! Amara made an owl pillow for her Mom for Christmas from a kit and she was so very proud! She is working on her first cross stitch!

  12. I completely agree about all the advantages I've gotten from sewing. My grandmother taught me. We started with napkins and an apron. I can't wait for my granddaughters to get a little older so I can teach them to sew.

I think my sister and I are going to teach beginning sewing this summer for teenagers in our neighborhood. I've been approached by several people whose kids want to learn.

  13. My dd6 received a sewing kit for Christmas. She loved doing the sewing though it took her a little bit to get the idea. I need to help her finish decorating her project.

Thanks for sharing this at Fabulously Frugal Thursday! I love how you pass your sewing skills on to your grandkids.

  14. I'm a new grandmother to a beautiful little girl. I won't be teaching her sewing skills as her other grandmother has her own sewing biz so she'll be in good hands. I'm the garden grandma, but I think some of your ideas I can still do with her. Thanks for linking this post to the Old Time Party!

  22. Such a great idea. I think I'll start by teaching my kids to sew on buttons, since they lose them all of the time. Thanks for sharing it in on Fluster's Creative Muster Party. I can't wait to see what you link up next week.

  25. It really is a wonderful skill and helps develop self confidence. I have to laugh though. I taught tole painting when my oldest daughter was about 10 or 12 A lady in my class was a sewing teacher. I exchanged her fee for my daughter taking lessons. She only did one season. If she has a button fall off of anything she brings it to me to sew on. Guess she didn't have the love for it as I do. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  30. You're such a special momma, Connie. These are great lessons. I'll be sharing them with my daughter. She had her four making rice bags last week. (They made one for me!)

  31. This is great you are teaching them to sew. My mother was a wonderful seamstress and tried to teach me. I just don't have patience with it and I only do it when I am forced. :) Wish I liked it more. Thanks for sharing Connie.

    Marcie
