Basically, for lotion bars, you need 1 part bees wax to 2 parts oil though you can play with amounts to get a bar just right for you. Google for recipes, there are lots! I chose to use coconut and olive oils so I used 1 part of each. I also wanted to scent my lotion bar with essential oils and my essential oil is a blend from Young Living called Peace & Calming. It is divine! The bees wax had a lovely scent and so did the coconut oil. After adding the essential oil blend it was heavenly! Please note; you do not need to add anything for scent. It is nice just as it is.
The jar will be really hot when you remove it from the water! Be Careful! When I added the cooler oils into the melted wax it looked curdled because the wax was solidifying again. That may not have happened if I had stirred the wax while slowly pouring in the oils. So I poured it back into the jar and put it in the hot water stirring until it once again melted.
The reason I marked the jar with the blue tape is so that I did not need to measure or weigh the oils for an equal part as the wax. It was a lazy fast way to get equal amounts of oils and wax.
After I again removed my jar from the hot water I stirred the mix to cool it some before I added my essential oil drops. I put about 20 drops of the Peace & Calming in the mix. Once it begins to look the slightest bit cloudy it will quickly solidify. (so pour into your mold before that ;) Not to worry if it starts to harden too soon, just put it back into the hot water. Mix essential oils in well and pour into your mold. My mold here is a clean single serve plastic apple sauce container. It worked perfectly for a mold, as my finished mix was a little less than 4 oz.
The finished bar pops out of the mold easily and melts by the warmth of your skin. It seems really greasy and thick going on but soaks in pretty well in minutes. Really great for my 'older' dry skin!
I will figure out how to simplify the process so there are not as many steps (I want everything to be as fast, easy as I can have it) though it still was very simple and fast. Such as only using one container through the whole process or even heating mixing and molding in same container, And, by the way, you can use the microwave instead of a pot of hot water. I was trying to preserve nutrients of the oils as much as possible and choose to use the stove top.

I like this idea! And I love that you recycled at the same time. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea. I have never heard of lotion bars until now...I must be living under a rock. I was recently introduced to the Young Living Essential Oils.
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of bees wax and of coconut oil too! The finished product must have been lovely :)
ReplyDeleteDo you use these instead of soap?
ReplyDeleteTHANKS FOR POSTING-my daughter is highly sensitive and I might try making some for her for Christmas, if they are a soap alternative?
gemmill.mary@gmail.com
Hello, no they are not a soap alternative. They are lotion in a solid form. I use hand made goat milk soap that I buy; it works great. I plan to learn how to make my own one day. You know, when I get around to it :)
DeleteJust straight water is actually a great soap alternative in most situations. I only use soap on my hands. :)
DeleteWould love to try this!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this. I love how the finished product looks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info.

ReplyDeleteI've never made my own lotion bars before - now I can't wait to give it a go! I bought beeswax recently to make lip balm, so I've got everything I need to get going right away :) I'd be thrilled if you'd come on over to Pink Recipe Box and link up at Creative Wednesdays: http://pinkrecipebox.com/creative-wednesdays-with-pink-recipe-box-6/

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of lotion INSIDE my soap. Avoid that dry ski feeling.... And beeswax is one of my favorite fragrances! Awesome idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!!

These would make great baby shower or bridal shower favors. Thanks for sharing. I'm pinning this just in case I ever get around to making gifts instead of just going crazy on amazon this year. Found you on the Serenity you link up.

This is similar to something I make. I prefer these homemade lotions to those purchased in the store. They leave your body feeling much better than the store bought stuff. Tea tree oil is a good ingredient to use and has a great aroma.

I love this! I have a handmade lotion bar that I bought and it is amazing, it actually works unlike most store bought lotion. Thanks for sharing, maybe I will get motivated and make some instead of buy it :)
ReplyDeleteoooh, I really love the shape of your mold simply using an applesauce cup! I make lotion bars often and usually in bulk, so I have a silicone mold that turns out perfectly shaped rectangular bars, but might start using this shape in addition. Also, I have always used a double boiler, which can get pretty messy; so I will certainly be trying a glass submerged next time. Thanks for your tips!
ReplyDeleteI made lotion bars last year. I didn't like the recipe. I'll have to try yours. xo
ReplyDeleteLooks like an awesome idea. I make something similar, but harder and in a jar.. I just use it on my yucky feet.. lol.. But this is a great idea for everywhere else!

I love your idea of melting the wax and then making a fill line. So clever! I tend to either weigh everything (if I am going to blog it), or guestimate everything, when I am dealing with things like sold coconut oil and wax which don't necessarily "measure" easily. Thanks for the tip :)
ReplyDeletePS Hi! I just popped over from the Homemade Mondays Linky List.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved this product at Lush and now I can make it! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this.
Thanks for sharing.
Hope to see you on my blog:)
I have never made the lotion bars, but you made it seem pretty easy. It sounds like they smell wonderful too. Thanks so much for linking this up to our All Things Thursday Blog Hop. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

Very nice tutorial. I want to try pain relief bars using menthol crystals. Both my hubby and I love a lotion called Pain-A-Trate which is sort of like bengay (sp?) only smells less medicinal and you can actually rub it in all the way – no more worrying about residue on your hands before you touch your eyes. I wonder if Candellila Wax would work for this recipe instead of beeswax? That’s what I have on hand for making lip balm with.
ReplyDeletethese look great - almost like a dessert! I may try my hand at making them- I make other stuff like this but never a lotion bar! great !
ReplyDeleteLove this! Love trying to replace store bought with natural and homemade. Thanks for the great tutorial. I'm featuring this on my social media sites today. Thanks for linking up!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. I can't wait to try it. I have been using home made face moisturizer for a couple of years now from a recipe I found on line. I never knew that the lotion bars were so easy. I am going to have to go find myself some bees wax. :-)

I am heading over to Make your Own Medicine to check out the different oils they have available, although Peace and Calming sounds quite charming.
