I love butter; I've never been a big fan of margarine. Butter is better for you than margarine too. Haven't you seen that email forward that's been going around for years or maybe the article on Facebook about the horrors of margarine? No? Well check this out, or this. Ok, are you convinced butter is better?
There are a couple of problems with using butter however. Straight out of the fridge it's
hard and not at all spreadable. It's also kind of expensive, and yes it is an animal fat and not as healthy as I would like it to be. But I have a solution to all those problems.
Once it is incorporated well, pour and scoop your fresh batch of butter spread into a lidded container and refrigerate where it will be ready when you want it.
Double or triple this batch and you will have plenty for a long time. You can buy the butter and olive oil spreads in the store and pay a lot of money for the convenience. But why would you when this is so easy and takes only minutes to do it yourself?

ReplyDeleteI used to make something similar for my family. I squeezed two Lecithin capsules in mine which helped give it consistency. Now that it's just the two of us, we use Land 'O Lakes blended butter/oil. It has none of the hydrogenated fats that are in margarine. But I totally agree that margarine is bad for our health.

I understand they have flavored olive oils now, including a butter flavored one. I hear they're all pretty good (?)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to compare the cost between the tubs and doing it myself.
Several people have told me they keep their butter out - one person I know of keeps theirs in a butter dish that's pottery or ironstone - (glazed). It has a lid and the potter/stone keeps it cool all day. ?? Don't know if I'd want to do that - but it stays spreadable that way.

Grape seed oil and coconut oil also work great, depending what flavor you like, plus added health benifits. I find grape seed oil leaves no extra flavor, great for just plain butter flavor oh how I love it on warm banana nut bread and on toast with tea when I'm feeling a little under the weather. Coconut oil gives a slight sweetish tropical flavor which is great for toast, muffins, banana nut bread also, and on baked zucchini with a little cinnamon. For cooking the hard stuff is fine but I make my own fresh butter in vitamix so I soften all of mine and it makes it go nearly twice as far also. The only thing I miss is the measuring paper package. And ummm whipped garlic herb butter to spread on home made bread. There is a world of good in butter.
