Organize Your Cars Glove Box

The glove box of my car was always a mess. Finding a good organizing system for the auto registration, insurance papers and other things I store in there, was as easy as re-purposing a coupon organizer.

I found a brand new organizer at my local thrift store for 50¢ that still had the card stock inserts with your choice of months or the alphabet to put into the tabs for each pocket section. You can also find these at the dollar stores.

I removed everything from my cars glove box and organized what I needed to keep in there into my coupon holder.  I have used it for several months now and my glove box is still clean and organized. Here’s how I use it.

I took the papers and items I wanted to have stored in my car and divided them into categories, printed the category names on my computer, cut and folded them over the card stock inserts that came with the organizer before inserting them into the sleeves. Then it was simply a matter of filing my items into the right pockets.

I have a pocket for auto insurance information; this is contact information and towing instructions, etc.. Another pocket for my medical information, my current medical insurance, my medical allergies, and any other info that might be needed in an emergency. I have a car seat in my car and sometimes I forget how to adjust straps and such when using the seat with different sizes and ages of children, so I keep the car seat manual in my organizer. An emergency pocket holds phone numbers of towing services, family cell and work numbers, doctors and pharmacy names and numbers. This is for first responders in the event I may not be able to answer their questions; as well as for me, as in emergencies it is sometimes hard to remember necessary information.

I also keep straws, and sealed packets with plastic forks and spoons in a pocket for the rare but inconvenient times a fast food order doesn’t include these needed items.
Here in Arizona it seems car batteries like to die during the hottest part of the summer. I keep my latest battery purchase receipt and warranty in one pocket, handy if the battery dies when I am away from home because it seems to always do that.

This organizer is easy to personalize for your own needs. Most importantly, my auto’s registration and my current proof of insurance are always at my finger tips kept in the little pocket on the front of the organizer.
We love it so much, we put one in my husbands truck too. I would not want to store things in there however that might include my social security number, bank account number, credit card numbers or other information that could be a disaster should your car be vandalized and that information end up in the wrong hands.

    1. I still love it and it's one of the best things I've done to be kind to myself; especially when I need something out of there!

  3. Smart thinking. If I put one in my car, though, my packrat hubby would have ALL KINDS of things in there that simply wouldn't make sense. Well, at least not to me.

Thank you for linking to the GRAND Social once again!

  5. Great idea. I was just adding the new insurance cards to our glove boxes thinking what a mess they were.

  6. That's a great idea - but.... (isn't there often one of those?) You mention one of them at the end of your post - cars can disappear, let alone be vandalised. Hence police advice in the UK to keep such info in a safe place at home. Mind you, that does mean remembering to take it with you when you go places! It's academic for me now, as I don't now have a car....but I'd certainly recommend the storage container anywhere for ALL those objects that need to be found in a hurry!

  9. What a smart idea - all of our important glove compartment papers are all shoved into the car manual in a big jumble. I was adding the new registration just the other day and thinking it would be a hassle to have to actually dig it out in an emergency.

  19. What a great idea! We all keep the same things in the "glove box" don't we? Just not gloves! Ha ha! Car insurance - check, battery receipts - check, extra straws and salt - check! I am going to do this! Thanks for the inspiration. Catherine
