Easy Inexpensive Fruit Salad

Want a crowd pleasing fruit salad that won’t break the bank? I’ve got one for you.

Empty a can of fruit cocktail into a colander.

Drain it well. You can put the colander on a plate or in a bowl, then in the fridge overnight to continue to drain. (there can be a lot of liquid still in the fruit so make sure your plate or bowl will hold it or you will be mopping out the fridge)  You can skip the overnight part if you want to, but wet fruit cocktail won’t work as well.

Now mix it with either Cool Whip or canned sweetened condensed milk. Add any other fruits or nuts that you would like in it.

And there you have it; it never fails to be a crowd pleaser at my house. A gallon size can cost $5 -$6 and can be found at places like Wal-Mart or Costco, usually on a bottom shelf. I fed 8 women and 9 children with a gallon size can today with some left over.

  1. Great for winter or summer...add fresh fruits of choice in summer but the canned fruit is the stretcher....I love it!

    1. That's right. My mom use to add coconut, banana slices and mini marshmellows to this. Thats good too.

  3. I do something quite similar to this, except I don't use Cool Whip, just several cans of fruits (tropical fruit, mandarin oranges, etc) then add a diced apple. If kids will be in the crowd, I throw in a bunch of mini marshmallows. It works for any season. Think I'll try adding Cool Whip next time.

    1. Yes it's kind of the same thing, I've made that kind too. My mom always put the marshmallows in it. I don't only because the cool whip makes it sweet and I didn't think it needed it.

  4. Sounds real good! Reminds me of ambrosia. When we were little, my mom made some yummy frozen pops with a fruit cocktail mixture, something like this, in some little dixie cups, with a popsicle stick inserted. Yummy!
